Be a part of the incredible history of ice skating in Yosemite National Park! In 1929 the first ice skating rink was built in Yosemite, and since then children and adults alike have enjoyed this classic Yosemite winter experience!
Nervous about ice skating? Don’t be! Let us teach you or your little ones to skate this year! The Yosemite Winter Club Ice Skating Program will be teaching basic ice skating at the Half Dome Village for the 2016-2017 winter season.
In order to participate in the Winter Club Ice Skating Program you must meet the following criteria:
• Be a member of the Yosemite Winter Club (yosemitewinterclub.com)
• Be at least 3½ years old
• Be able to stand up and walk wearing skates
There is no cost except membership to the YWC. You will need skates (the rink rents skates for a nominal fee), a helmet (the rink has extra helmets free of charge), and obvious things like warm pants and gloves. We highly recommend snow pants for little ones to help cushion them when they fall.
Monday January 9 through Friday March 3, 2017.
No advanced registration needed.
We will be offering two classes this year:
Beginner Youth Skating
Mondays from 6p- 7p
This is a true beginner class for children 3½ years old and up. Children must be able to stand upright and walk in their skates. Children will practice skating forward, getting up after falling, gliding on two feet, forward swizzles, and coming to a full stop. * Due to the smaller ice rink we are limiting this group to true beginners. We recommend kids in their 1st, 2nd or 3rd year of skating. No advanced groups such as figure skating and hockey like last year- this will give us more space to focus on the all the beginners with no age restrictions.Sign up’s, pizza dinner and first class assessments will begin on the first day of class. Please arrive by 5:30p for the first class.
Optional Potluck Dinners: Each week 2-3 families sign up to provide dinner for the Monday class. Dinner begins at 5:30p. The potluck dinners ensure that all the kids have a good dinner before getting on the ice. Sign up’s will happen on the first day of class.
Beginner Figure Skating(Easy and Fun!)
Fridays from 6p-7p
This is for the advancedbeginner to medium level skater who wants to learn basic figure skating techniques. No age limit- recommended for tweens, teens and adults. We will practice forward cross overs, backwards skating, backwards swizzles, backward crossovers, simple chasse, simple spins, lunges, one foot glides, waltz jump and more! This is intended to be a fun and easy class, so please don’t be scared! Just come and have some fun!
